LFF spokesman Dan Richey, himself a former state senator then of Ferriday, listed ten Senate candidates who have supported cloning in the past, eight Democrats and two Republicans, Montgomery and Sherri Smith Cheek of Shreveport.
Though its population is under 4,000, Ferriday is the hometown of some half dozen well-known personalities, including the cousins Jimmy Swaggart and Jerry Lee Lewis, and the television news commentators Howard K. Smith and Campbell Brown.
Prolife spokesman Dan Richey, himself a former state senator, said the group opposed Townsend because of his past support of human cloning.
In 2004, Bennett ran unsuccessfully again, this time for a seat on the 144-member Republican State Central Committee from House District 61, but he lost to Dan Richey, a former member of both houses of the state legislature, having represented the area about Concordia Parish.
Among his classmates was Dan Richey, who served as a Democrat in the Louisiana House (1976–1980) and the Louisiana Senate (1980–1984), and is now affiliated with the Louisiana Family Forum, a conservative interest group which supported Nowlin in his legislative campaign.
