Basil Spalding was born on December 11, 1846 to John Spalding, a slave-holding tobacco plantation owner and his second wife, Mary Carroll, a great-granddaughter of Daniel Carroll, a Founding Father of the United States.
(Several acres are now associated with the house museum known as Darnall's Chance, listed on the National Register of Historic Places).

Two Carroll sons were prominent members of colonial and early United States society: Daniel Carroll became a politician in the Continental Congress and Maryland Senate, and member of the Constitutional Convention; and John Carroll became the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States, and founder of Georgetown University.
He was a lineal descendant of Daniel Carroll and studied at St. Mary's College of Baltimore.
It was the ancestral home of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Catholic signatory of the American Declaration of Independence, whose grandfather, Charles Carroll the Settler, is believed to have been born in the locality—his father being known as Daniel Carroll of Aghagurty and Littermurna.
