In 1540 under the episcopate of Rinaldo de' Cancellieri, it was united to the Diocese of Bisaccia (the ancient Romulea); it appears first as a bishopric in 1179.

Angelo Massarelli was the Roman Catholic bishop of Sant’ Agata de’ Goti.
On 21 March 1984 Leonardo was appointed to the Diocese of Sant'Agata de' Goti then to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant’Agata de’ Goti when the diocese of Telese o Cerreto Sannita and the Diocese of Sant'Agata de' Goti united on 29 September 1986.
The main centres of the Hirpini were Malies or Maloenton (modern Benevento), Romulea (Bisaccia), Compsa (Conza), Aquilonia, Lacedonia and Abellinum (Avellino).
