After the company's takeover of Dornier's civil assets in 1996, the company was renamed Fairchild Dornier.
Weather permitting, twin-engined Dornier and Twin Otters make frequent daylight flights between Lukla and Kathmandu.
The area was surveyed by two Dornier hydroplanes, Boreas and Passat one piloted by Richardheinrich Schirmacher who on 3 February 1939, spotted both the oasis and the lake at its centre.
