In 1794, Fr Thomas Austin Lawson OSB from Downside Abbey came to Richmond to start a mission to the local Catholics of the area.

Sillem was educated at Haileybury and Magdalen College, Oxford, and received the habit at the Benedictine abbey of St Gregory, Downside, in 1929.
In January 2012, Father Richard White, a monk at Downside Abbey, near Westfield, Somerset, who formerly taught at its school, was jailed for five years for gross indecency and indecent assault against a pupil in the late 1980s.
