In the first round proper, Anderlecht eliminated CSKA Red Star of Bulgaria (drew 2-2 away, won 2-0 at home) but lost in the quarter finals to the Scottish team of Dundee FC (lost 1-4 at home, 1-2 away).

In 2003, due to the club's failure to sell on players as anticipated, insufficient income was raised to fund the large wage bill, under owners Peter & James Marr, resulting in a £23 m debt, they were forced to go into administration with many players such as Fabian Caballero, Craig Burley and Georgian captain Giorgi Nemsadze leaving the club in 2005.

Alexandre da Silva A Cerdeira or simply Alex Cerdeira (born 14 April 1980 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian (Portuguese citizenship) midfielder/striker, who has played in some clubs in Europe, like Apollon Kalamarias, Dundee F.C., Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja, Botev Plovdiv, and had the last contract ended in 2012 with Centro de Futebol Zico Sociedade Esportiva, Brazil.
An earlier East of Scotland League existed between 1896 and 1906, when the supplementary Edinburgh Football League changed its name, after accepting Dundee as a member.
After a brief return to Paraguay with Sol de América, Caballero signed with Scottish Premier League club Dundee F.C. from 2000 to 2005, with whom he played for in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup and finished as runners-up in the 2002–03 Scottish Cup, after a 1–0 loss against Rangers F.C. in the final on 31 May 2003.
His late father, Ian Gellatly, was Chairman of Dundee F.C. and President of the Scottish Football League, while his grandfather was chairman of the club when they won the Scottish League Championship in 1961–62.
He was transferred to RAF Leuchars in Fife in 1944 and subsequently turned out for Dundee as a guest in the war-time North-Eastern League.
