Clarinetist Berkhout was discovered in the 1980s by the pianist Pim Jacobs, who presented him on Dutch television as a soloist with The Metropole Orkest under Rogier van Otterloo, together with the clarinetist Eddie Daniels.
His music has also been featured on the albums of numerous other jazz greats including Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Eddie Daniels, Philly Joe Jones, Dino Saluzzi, and Tony Williams.
Big record stars hired him for writing arrangements, including Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, Tony Bennett, Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, Luis Miguel, Eddie Daniels, Barry Manilow, and many others.
Tommy has worked with many "world class" jazz stars such as Ira Sullivan, Eddie Daniels, Marvin Stamm, Bobby Ojeda, John Fedchock, Warren Kime, Mark Colby, Richie Cole, Von Freeman, Ron Dewar, Michael S. Smith, Isaac Redd Holt (of the Ramsey Lewis Trio fame), Donny Osborne and the late Barrett Deems of Louis Armstrong fame, to name just a few.
