The cathedral building was originally designed by Edmund Blacket in 1845 as a parish church, but became a cathedral in 1870 with the creation of the Diocese of Bathurst.
He is also an indirect descendant of the architect Edmund Blacket.
In the later years of the first Rector's time at St Thomas', the Anglican architect Edmund Blacket was recommended to design a larger church; it opened in 1884.
