The critic Edmund Gosse praised the poem, and the American artist Rockwell Kent considered illustrating it, before choosing another of Hardy's poems to be published with his artwork.
Among Dr. G. N. Epps's children were Dr. Washington Epps, a well-known homoeopathist, Laura Theresa, Lady Alma-Tadema, and Mrs. Edmund Gosse.
In 1898 he published his Historia de la literatura espaƱola in the Collection of Literatures of the World under Edmund Gosse.
The novel partly takes its inspiration from Father and Son, the autobiography of the English poet Edmund Gosse, which describes his relationship with his father, Philip Henry Gosse.

In his memoir Father and Son (1907), Edmund Gosse views Yes Tor, near which he lived when a boy, as an unthreatening and unprepossessing hill: "Alas! We might as well have attempted to rouse the summit of Yes Tor into volcanic action."
