The Christian Brothers were founded in Ireland in 1802 by Brother Edmund Rice to educate the sons of poor and oppressed Catholic families.
Howe was also a descendant of Edmund Rice another early immigrant to Sudbury, and John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts.
In Sudbury the Connecticut Path was known as "the road from Watertown to the Dunster Farm", for after passing along the north side of Cochituate Pond, it crossed the tract beyond that was granted to Henry Dunster, president of Harvard College, and the lands of Edmund Rice, and Philemon Whale.
Edmund Rice was born to Robert Rice and Margaret Rice (née Tierney) on the farming property of "Westcourt", in Callan, County Kilkenny.
The first two 'Edmund Rice' camps took place at Parade College in Melbourne, Australia, in January 1981, as a form of community outreach for the students of Parade, and as a way of sharing the extensive resources of Parade left unused during the Australian summer.
