After years in Oaxaca, the Scheiers returned to the United States, settling in Green Valley, Arizona, where Edwin and Mary resided until their deaths.

The couple taught there for over 20 years before moving to Mexico to study Oaxacan Indian arts and crafts.
In 1939, along with her husband, Edwin Scheier, they both set up their first studio in Glade Spring.
The operation had been supervised originally by the husband and wife team of Edwin Scheier (1910–2008) and Mary Goldsmith (1908–2007).
