At the end of his life, he seemed to have developed a syncretist religion containing elements of Catholicism, Buddhism and idolatry.

British singer Marc Almond (Soft Cell) with Michael Cashmore released the CD Gabriel & The Lunatic Lover in 2008 with two songs based on Stenbock's poems by the same name.

He died during a drunken argument with his stepfather, Sir Francis Mowatt, then Permanent Secretary of the Treasury.
