In the 1975 film The Hindenburg, Captain Lehmann was portrayed by Richard Dysart, although this portrayal is quite inaccurate with Lehmann appearing wary of the Nazis, whereas the real Lehmann was a well-known supporter.

In the cause of peace, Lehmann traveled to more than 150 countries, speaking out for non-violence, tolerance, and understanding with such other voices as Nehru and Schweitzer to all who would listen.
He later created the part of Adam in F. C. Burnand and R. C. Lehmann's His Majesty (1897; appearing briefly as King Ferdinand when George Grossmith abandoned the part, until Henry Lytton took over).
After 2 years as assistant professor and associate director of PM&R at Ohio State University, he was recruited to the University of Washington in 1957 to be professor and the founding chair of the Department of PM&R there.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Lehmann was the recipient of American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Gold Key Award in 1971, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s Frank H. Krusen Award in 1983, and the Association of Academic Physiatrists’ Distinguished Member Award in 1993.
He held the record until May 2005, when Australian comedian, Anthony "Lehmo" Lehmann told 549 jokes.
In his last book (2002), he assembled extensive data from the nominal and verbal systems, from the lexicon, phonology, and syntax of the ancient IE languages, to argue that Pre-Indo-European was active/stative in alignment, rather than nominative/accusative.

He served as Director of the Georgetown English Language Program in Ankara, Turkey in 1955–56, as Chairman of the Linguistics Delegation to the People's Republic of China in 1974, and as Co-Chairman of the Commission on Humanities and Social Sciences to the People's Republic of China in 1981.
