He witnessed a strong opposition between Monate and Errico Malatesta: Monate defended revolutionary trade unionism, on one hand, while Malatesta, on the other hand, thought unionism could only be reformist.
Malatesta was born to a family of middle-class landowners in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy (in the province of Caserta) on December 14, 1853.

Returning to Europe in 1889, he published a newspaper called L'Associazione in Nice until he was forced to flee to London.
It remains controversial to this day, continuing to inspire some anarchists (notably the platformism tendency) because of the clarity and functionality of the structures it proposes, while drawing criticism from others (including, at the time of publication, Voline and Malatesta) who viewed its implications as too rigid and hierarchical.

Many leading figures of the global anarchist movement, including Errico Malatesta, Amilcare Cipriani, Élisée Reclus, Luigi Galleani and Pietro Gori passed through Egypt at various points and for various reasons, owing to its position as a relative safe haven for political dissidents and close proximity to Europe.
In 1891, the town hosted the Capolago Anarchist Congress, attended by Italian anarchist militants such as Pietro Gori, Amilcare Cipriani, Francesco Saverio Merlino and Errico Malatesta.
He was a founding member of the Malatesta Club, an anarchist social club and venue that opened in London on May Day 1954.
Having had a close affinity with Colin Ward and Vernon Richards it has produced much of their extensive back catalogue, in addition to titles by Clifford Harper, Nicolas Walter, Murray Bookchin, Gaston Leval, William Blake, Errico Malatesta, Harold Barclay and many others, including 118 issues of the journals Anarchy, edited by Colin Ward and 43 issues of The Raven.
In January 1891, he was a supporter of Errico Malatesta in the Congress of Capolago during which the Socialist Revolutionary Anarchist Party (Partito Socialista Anarchico Rivoluzionario) was founded.
