6 unusual facts about Pietro Gori

Anarchism in Egypt

Many leading figures of the global anarchist movement, including Errico Malatesta, Amilcare Cipriani, Élisée Reclus, Luigi Galleani and Pietro Gori passed through Egypt at various points and for various reasons, owing to its position as a relative safe haven for political dissidents and close proximity to Europe.

Capolago

In 1891, the town hosted the Capolago Anarchist Congress, attended by Italian anarchist militants such as Pietro Gori, Amilcare Cipriani, Francesco Saverio Merlino and Errico Malatesta.

Pietro Gori

In January 1891, he was a supporter of Errico Malatesta in the Congress of Capolago during which the Socialist Revolutionary Anarchist Party (Partito Socialista Anarchico Rivoluzionario) was founded.

In London, he became severely ill, and recovered at the National Hospital.

As a precaution, authorities regularly arrested him just before demonstrations each May Day.

On May 13, 1890, he was arrested again, this time for helping to organize May Day demonstrations in Livorno.
