He directed the Leopoldstadt Theater Music School and by the 1790s had become known for his popular Singspiele.
The theatre was operational until 1805, when it burned down just before a performance of Ferdinand Kauer's Rusalka.

In the field of secular music Davydov participated in the composing of opera tetralogy Mermaid (together with Ferdinand Kauer and Catterino Cavos, 1803–1807, providing the additional music for the 1st, 3rd and 4th parts).
