The herd was managed from the Fielding Garr Ranch on the east side of the island and even today the bison in the herd tend to congregate in that area.

Bison may occur almost anywhere on the island, including the northern end near the causeway, but most of them tend to congregate on the east side near the Fielding Garr Ranch.

In 1981, the State of Utah purchased the Fielding Garr Ranch and the rest of the island, including ownership of the herd which was once again numbering in the hundreds.
