Starting out in US Formula Super Vee, the single-seat Can-Am series, and North American Formula Atlantic in the late 70's including a 7th place points finish in the 1977 Formula Atlantic season, Mead later made 7 starts in the CART Championship Car series from 1980 to 1983.
He competed in Formula 1600, Formula 2000, Champcar Light, Formula Renault, Formula Vauxhall Junior, Touring car, Spec Racer, Formula Atlantic, and Daytona Prototypes, and competed at circuits including Silverstone, Magny Cours, Daytona Speedway, Mont Tremblant and Gilles Villeneuve.

In 2008, Mällinen raced in the IMSA Lites L1 class driving an Élan Motorsport Technologies DP02 sports prototype and won the 2008 Formula Atlantic championship driving a Swift Engineering TRD 014.a for Swan Racing in the southeast division.
