The Urban Rangers' Portable Ranger Station was shown at the 2009 International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in the Netherlands Architecture Institute, and the group has had its work included in "Actions: What You Can Do With The City", at The Graham Foundation in Chicago, and in the Experimental Geography on the road show on display through 2011.
Former Graham Foundation director Carter Manny described the Madlener House as “an unusually successful amalgamation of tradition and innovation in architecture, a harmonious reflection of its time and place.” This amalgamation refers to the eclectic usages of then-popular architectural styles in the Midwest and abroad, as well as the incorporation of both organic and geometric design elements.
He periodically serves as a visiting professor of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Rice University, University of Arizona, and M.I.T. In 2002, Joy’s first monograph was published entitled Rick Joy: Desert Works, the first in the Princeton Architectural Press/Graham Foundation invited New Voices in Architecture series.
