Julie Ranivo and Steven Goodman revised Madagascar Triaenops in 2006 and clarified the distinction between T. auritus of northern Madagascar and the closely related T. furculus of western Madagascar, which have nonoverlapping ranges.

Guillaume Grandidier first described the species in 1912, as Triaenops aurita, on the basis of a single poorly preserved specimen collected at Diégo-Suarez (now Antsiranana) in northernmost Madagascar.

According to Grandidier, the number of monks increased considerably during the time of Beatus and monks were sent out to found other churches and monasteries, including those at Luttenbach, in Alsace Aschaffenburg in Germany and Munster in Switzerland, all of which depended on Honau.
A number of animals are named after him, including the Coquerel's Coua Coua coquereli (Grandidier, 1867), the Coquerel's Sifaka Propithecus coquereli (Milne-Edwards, 1867), and the Coquerel's Giant Mouse Lemur Mirza coquereli (Grandidier, 1867), each of these species endemic to Madagascar.
Percival's Trident Bat (Cloeotis percivali) is a species of bat in the family Hipposideridae.
