3 unusual facts about Grenache

Château Val Joanis

The AOC wines of Château de Val Joanis are made with Grenache and Syrah grapes for the red wines and rosés and Grenache blanc, Roussanne, and Ugni blanc for the whites.

Grenache

Garnacha plays a major role in the Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOC/DOQ) wines of Rioja and Priorat and the Denominación de Origen (DO) wines of Navarra and all southern Aragonese and southern Catalonian appellations, plus the mountainous areas just southwest of Madrid: Méntrida and Cebreros.

It has good wind tolerance (which is useful with the northerly Cierzo and Mistral winds that influence the regions of Aragon and the Rhone) and has shown itself to be very suited for the dry, warm windy climate around the Mediterranean.

Les vins skalli

In the 1920s, Robert-Elie Skalli starts working in wine-making and chooses land in the Oran, Mascara and Aïn Témouchent regions of Algeria to plant Southern French variety vines such as Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Alicante, and so on.

Moroccan wine

The traditional red grapes planted in Morocco are Carignan (which once dominated), Cinsaut (almost 40 per cent in 2005), Alicante, and Grenache.

Tablas Creek Vineyard

Tablas Creek produces a wide range of varietal labeled wines including Roussanne, Grenache blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Picpoul blanc, Counoise, Viognier, Bergeron, Vermentino and Tannat.
