Gurindji Strike

There were demonstrations and arrests in southern Australia in support of the walk-off, and many church, student and trade union groups gave practical and fundraising support to the Gurindji struggle.

In 1914, Wave Hill Station was bought by Vesteys, a British pastoral company comprising a large conglomerate of cattle companies owned by Baron Vestey.

Mum Shirl

In 1970, Smith, along with Ken Brindle, and Chicka and Elsa Dixon, were the guiding force behind a group of young Aboriginal men and women who were involved in the campaign for land rights by the Gurindji people.

Vestey Group

This sparked the Gurindji strike in 1966, where the Group was forced seven years later by Gough Whitlam's government to return part of the land they owned to its indigenous owners.
