In 1957 the French Avant-Garde Groupe Situationist International was founded in Cosio di Arroscia by former members of two other avant-garde groupes, the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus (Asger Jorn, Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio a.o.) and the Lettrist International (Guy Debord a.o.).

The idea of pseudo-events anticipates later work by Jean Baudrillard and Guy Debord.
Jaime Semprun gave a lot of his time, along with Anne Krief (his partner) and Michel Pétris, to the translation and publication of the writings of George Orwell unpublished in France at the time for the éditions Ivrea coedited with the éditions de l'Encyclopédie des Nuisances, a work he started, according to Christophe Bourseiller, « under the auspices » of Guy Debord and Gérard Lebovici.
Rumney was an English New Realist and one of the founders, along with Guy Debord and Piero Simondo, of the Situationist International.
Its name was inspired by the book and film of the same name The Society of the Spectacle (La Société du spectacle) written by Situationist and Marxist theorist, Guy Debord.

Their name is taken from the book Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the 20th Century by Greil Marcus, itself a reference to a line in Guy Debord's 1978 film In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni.
A more playful and sensuous direction was charted, nodding more to the situationism of Asger Jorn than Guy Debord, with frequent allusions to the "magico-Marxism" current amongst British groups, such as the reformed London Psychogeographical Association.
She also authored Au Pays du Sommeil Paradoxal (translated as In Slumberpuzzleland) and Là s'en vont les seigneuries (an account about her travel with Guy Debord in Rello, Spain, with photos by Emmanuel Rioufol, 2003).
