He also helped to create a prototype for Britain's Polytechnics by sending his students to work on collaborative projects with engineering students from Leeds College of Technology, out of which Leeds Polytechnic was formed.

The origin of the foundation course dates back to the 1950s in the north of England, when William Coldstream began teaching at King's College, Newcastle, and Harry Thubron at Leeds College of Art.
His three years in Leeds, between 1955 and 1958, were highly influential, bringing him into close contact with painters such as Alan Davie, Terry Frost and Harry Thubron.
