In April 2011 it was announced that the Italian Minister of Economic Development, Paolo Romani, had pledged $85 million towards an upgrade of Herat International Airport, along with additional funds to develop a 28 kilometre road within the province.

One of the most exotic and distinctive of all oriental rugs is the Shindand or Adraskan (named after local Afghan towns), woven in the Herat Province, in western Afghanistan.

Mirwais Sadiq (died March 21, 2004) was the Civil Aviation Minister of Afghanistan and the son of the Ismail Khan, who was then the governor of Herat Province.
