The bridge is the nearest to the mouth of the River Douglas, although there was a railway bridge that crossed the river at Hesketh Bank which was demolished when the West Lancashire Railway closed in 1965.
In 1906 the Star class, designed by George Cockshott for the West Lancashire Yacht Club, and built by Lathoms of Hesketh Bank at a cost of £32 each.
