Ferdinand von Hochstetter

New Zealand's endemic Hochstetter's frog, Leiopelma hochstetteri, is named after Ferdinand.

Maungatautari Restoration Project

In December 2004, eleven endangered Hochstetter's frogs were found living on Maungatautari in a rocky region.


Archey's frog

It is named after Sir Gilbert Archey (1890–1974), the former Director of the Auckland Institute.

Charles Mohr

There he studied chemistry under Professor Hermann von Fehling and learned the plant world of the tropics in the greenhouses of the imperial court garden where his childhood friend, Wilhelm Hochstetter, was an apprentice.

Chile Darwin's frog

The Chile Darwin's frog has a very restricted range in central Chile, being found in Talca Province and southwards to Bío Bío Province, between from 33° 30'S to 37° 50'S.

Hose's frog

Its closest living relatives appear to be O. chloronota which occurs to the north of Hose's frog's range, as well as O. livida and O. morafkai with a more limited range in Myanmar and Vietnam, respectively; these four appear to form a close-knit group wherein the northern species are barely closer to each other than Hose's frog is to any of them.
