Previous winners of the competition have included High Tide (2008), who went on to perform at the Fuji Rock festival; I.O. (2009), later nominated for "Best Band" and "Best Newcomer" at the Golden Melody Awards; and most recently Trash (2012).
Soon after graduating, Makinson moved to Los Angeles where she studied at Improv Olympic, going on to become a stand-out performer in groups like Brand X, King Ten, and The Armondo Show.

The band is also well known by fans of TJ and Dave, an improv duo with Chicago actor and improviser David Pasquesi who perform regularly at the IO Theater in Chicago.
The SFIC produced master classes by some improv teachers including Charna Halpern (IO Theater), Mick Napier (Annoyance Theatre), David Razowsky (Second City Los Angeles), and Ian Roberts and Matt Besser (Upright Citizens Brigade).
In 1991, Stroth began studying long-form improvisation with Del Close and Charna Halpern at what was then called Improv Olympic, now the iO Theater in Chicago.
