They make up the 5th largest ethnic group in Sarawak, after the Ibans, Chinese, Malays and Bidayuh.

Benedict Sandin (1918–1982) was an Iban ethnologist, historian, and Curator of the Sarawak Museum in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Then, in came the marauding Ibans from Kapuas (in Kalimantan), a powerful headhunting tribe at that time, attacking them and chasing them out of their homeland.
To prevent further Iban migration upriver in the Rajang River basin, which was creating conflicts with the Orang Ulu, Rajah Charles Brooke built Baleh Fort at Nanga Balleh, the confluence of the Rejang and Baleh rivers between Kanowit and Song in late 1874.

On November 16, 1924, a peacekeeping ceremony between the Iban, Kayan, Kenyah and Kajang was held here in the presence of Rajah Charles Brooke.
During that time, the Ibans were also engaged in conflict with the Orang Ulu of northern Sarawak, the Bidayuh of southern Sarawak, the Kantu and other Indonesian ethnic tribes from eastern Sarawak; the Iban successfully controlled the western coastline of Sarawak.
The region is the home to a diversity of indigenous groups, including the Iban and the Silat.
Many of the inhabitants of the Southeast Asian island of Borneo (now Kalimantan, Indonesia and States of Sarawak and Sabah, Malaysia), the Dayak, live traditionally in buildings known as a longhouse, Rumah panjang / Rumah Betang in Indonesian, rumah panjai in Iban.
He continues to inspire some Iban Dayaks especially those who joined the military initially as trackers like the Malaysia’s most decorated war hero Kanang anak Langkau, Awang anak Raweng and other heroes.
