Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan gave his opinion in September 2007 that the euro could indeed replace the US dollar as the world's primary reserve currency.

In October 2012, the President of Panama Ricardo Martinelli suggested that he was considering making the euro an official currency of the country to go along with the US dollar.

The Swedish town Höganäs, does, since 1 January 2009, generally allow shop payments in euros alongside of the Swedish krona.
