Jeffrey Alexander Sterling is an American former CIA employee who was indicted, arrested, and charged with violating the Espionage Act for allegedly revealing details about Operation Merlin to journalist James Risen.
In late 2010, former CIA-officer Jeffrey Alexander Sterling was indicted for allegedly being a source for some of the information in Risen's book.
Risen declined to do so both times, but in January 2011, it was revealed that former CIA agent Jeffrey Alexander Sterling had illegally leaked classified information to Risen about the agency's involvement in Iran's nuclear program.
