5 unusual facts about Johan Christian Fabricius

Alucita

Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775 seems to have been the first author to consider Alucita a genus in its own right, and it remains so until today.

Depressaria

To make matters worse, J. Curtis popularized another incorrect spelling, D. heracleana, apparently first introduced (as Pyralis heracleana) by J.C. Fabricius in his 1775 Systema Entomologiae.

Johann Gerhard König

In 1778, König was transferred to a post with the British East India Company where he remained until his death, undertaking several scientific journeys and working with notable scientists like William Roxburgh, Johan Christian Fabricius and Sir Joseph Banks.

Nudaurelia cytherea capensis

Nudaurelia cytherea (Fabr., 1775) capensis (Cramer, 1780) aka as the Pine Tree Emperor Moth, or Christmas Caterpillar because of it festive colouration, is a Southern African member of the Saturniidae family.

Oecophora

The genus' type species was initially given as the Tinea sulphurella described by J.C. Fabricius in 1777.

Harish Gaonkar

The Arhopala butterflies described by Fabricius: A. centaurus is from Java, A. democritus from Phuket (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), Entomological science, Volume 9 Issue 3, Pages 295 - 311, Published Online: 27 Sep 2006, Richard I. Vane-Wright and Harish Gaonkar, Department of Entomology, the Natural History Museum, London, UK (September 2006).

Melolontha

Étienne Louis Geoffroy used Melolontha as a genus name (1762), but his book has been suppressed by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, and the authority for the name is the later (1775) publication by Johan Christian Fabricius.
