Ethno ambient is related in spirit to techno tribal, ethno techno, and especially to "Fourth World" music and "ambient" music, launched in the late 1970s by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno, respectively.
Loop Guru's main exuberant oeuvre of lively rhythms and effusive sounds is occasionally punctuated by more contemplative albums (e.g., The Third Chamber) that are reminiscent and influenced by ambient music and similar to musical artists such as Brian Eno and Jon Hassell.

Composers represented on the label include Johnson's husband Robert Ashley (most of whose major works are in its catalog), as well as David Behrman, Alvin Lucier, Paul Dresher, William Duckworth, Jon Hassell, Joan La Barbara, David Tudor, Peter Gordon, and Meredith Monk, among others.
Beside Sylvian, "Fourth World" trumpeter Jon Hassell, Sylvians' brother and formally Japan's drummer Steve Jansen, German Ex-Can-member Holger Czukay tuning the radio, and Brand X-, respectively Soft Machine-bassist Percy Jones took part in the recordings, which were engineered by Nigel Walker, who also co-produced the album.
