2 unusual facts about Jose de Diego


José de Diego

While in Spain, de Diego collaborated with the newspaper El Progreso (Progress) which was founded by José Julián Acosta y Blanco and which attacked the political situation in Puerto Rico; this led to various arrests which eventually forced him to leave the Madre Patria (Motherland) to return to the island.

Oscar Collazo

When Collazo was 14 years old, he participated in a student demonstration, which the government had made illegal, commemorating the birth of José de Diego, a known advocate for Puerto Rican independence who had died two years before.


Americo Boschetti

He had written over 500 songs and had also transformed some of the poems from the likes of Jose de Diego, Luis Lloréns Torres, Julia de Burgos, Juan Antonio Corretjer and José Martí into songs by adding music to the lyrics.
