He began his career in broadcasting at KHVH-TV in Honolulu as news anchor-reporter from 1966 to 1971, with a short interval in Anchorage, Alaska, as a news anchor-reporter for KENI-TV from 1967 to 1968.

In its early days, it carried business news programming from Financial News Network, ethnic programming from the International Television Network, and carried ABC, CBS, and NBC programs that KITV (channel 4), KGMB (then on channel 9, now on channel 5) and KHON-TV (channel 2) chose to decline; programming from ABC's daytime lineup that was pre-empted by KITV was the most visible on KSHO's schedule.
KOAT is also one of six ABC affiliates and one of three Hearst-owned ABC stations to have an hour-long 10 p.m. newscast, along with KITV in Honolulu and WISN in Milwaukee; as well as KRGV in Weslaco, Texas, KSTP in Saint Paul, Minnesota, KIFI in Idaho Falls, Idaho and WEAR in Pensacola, Florida.
