His badly decomposed body, washed ashore ten days later on the beach near Viareggio, is identified by the copy of Keats' Lamia and Isabella in the jacket pocket and cremated there in the presence of his friends Lord Byron and the adventurer Edward John Trelawny who claims to have seized Shelley's heart from the flames; he gives it to Mary Shelley, who keeps it for the rest of her life.
On 27 April 1861 he married the distinguished painter, Ann Mary, daughter of Joseph Severn, himself a painter and the friend of Keats, who had succeeded Newton in Rome; she died in 1866 at their residence, 74 Gower Street, Bloomsbury.

Among the many for which he furnished the drawings were Grimm's Fairy Tales (1853); Keats's Eve of St. Agnes (1856); Coleridge's Ancient Mariner (1857); The Pilgrim's Progress (1858); Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (1861); Robinson Crusoe (1862); and Edgar Allan Poe's Poetical Works (1865).
His passion for Shelley and Keats resulted in collaborative work with others and articles on a number of minor poets such as Thomas Wake and Charles Jeremiah Wells.
While in Rome during the winter of 1820-21, Severn wrote numerous letters about Keats to their mutual friends in England, in particular William Haslam and Charles Armitage Brown, who then shared them with other members of the Keats circle, including the poet's fiancée, Fanny Brawne.

He wrote the introduction to The Selected Letters of John Keats (1951), in which he defended Keats’s notion of negative capability, as well as the introduction, “George Orwell and the Politics of Truth," to the 1952 reissue of George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia.

When Nelson relieved Bickerton and took command of the fleet in the Mediterranean Keats remained with him off Toulon and accompanied the fleet to the West Indies in 1805 in the famous chase of Admiral Villeneuve that culminated in the Battle of Trafalgar.
Keats mounts an attack against Alexander Pope and many of his own fellow Romantic poets by downplaying their poetic departures into the imaginary: "with a puling infant's force/They sway'd about upon a rocking horse,/And thought it Pegasus. Ah dismal soul'd!" (185-7).
Another notable role was Keats' memorable performance in the celebrated movie Hester Street (adapted from author Abraham Cahan's original Yiddish story "Yekl.") Set on New York City's Lower East Side of the 1890s, Keats played Jake Putkovsky (late of Russia), an assimilated "Amerikaner," complete with derby hat and an impressive handlebar moustache.

Steven Keats (February 6, 1945 – May 8, 1994) was an American actor who appeared in such films as Silent Rage, Death Wish, Gumball Rally, Black Sunday, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Badge of the Assassin and the TV-movie version of the Norman Mailer book The Executioner's Song starring Tommy Lee Jones.
Keats spent the early 80s as a performance photographer, shooting for the New Jersey State Opera in Newark, Mary Jane Eisenberg, Mabou Mines Theater Company, and for organizations such as Rock Against Racism.

In a class at New York's International Center of Photography, Keats explores a new genre, coining the phrase "The Invasion Of Privacy Photographers" citing himself, Clark, Tress, Solomon, Nan Goldin, Ryan McGinley.

Severn, accompanied by Gladstone's aide Leigh Hunt, farcast to Tau Ceti Center, but instead arrive on a world that is an apparent analog of 19th century Earth and, in particular, the city of Rome, where the historical Keats died.
