The main logistics and administrative centre is the Shore Support Base, at Kyle of Lochalsh.
These were needed primarily for the increased traffic on the Kyle line where they were the heaviest locomotives permitted.

In 1895 the West Highlands proposed building a line from Fort William to Mallaig, the Highland objecting as it would compete with their line to Strome Ferry and its planned extension to Kyle of Lochalsh on journeys to Skye.
They have been seen as far afield as Kyle of Lochalsh, Falmouth and even across the Atlantic; at least one was exported to the USA, and another was transported to Brazil by the artist Simon Starling and features as a piece of installation art!
The A87 road passes through the village, continuing on along the north coast of Loch Duich, passing Dornie, Nostie and Kirkton on to Kyle of Lochalsh.

The Skye and Lochalsh District Council coat of arms, granted by Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1987, featured a wavy blue fess across the centre of the shield for the Kyle of Lochalsh.
