Kober worked in the voluntary sector for End Child Poverty, Leonard Cheshire and the Family Welfare Association (now Family Action)
He was the father of Leonard Cheshire, VC, the English war hero and founder of the Cheshire Foundation Homes for the Sick.

They had two children: (Geoffrey) Leonard Cheshire, VC, OM, DSO, DFC, and Christopher Cheshire, who was also a wartime pilot.
The marathon supports several charities, including Highland Hospice, Leonard Cheshire, Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland, and the Scottish Community Foundation.
From August 1942 to April 1943, No 76 Squadron was commanded by Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire.
His friendship with Leonard Cheshire led to his editing a slender volume providing an insight into Cheshire's spiritual resources during his struggle with the effects of motor neurone disease, entitled Crossing the Finishing Line – Last Thoughts of Leonard Cheshire VC (1998, ISBN 0-85439-527-X, see pp. 7–14, 80).
