Schuetz was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1931, until his death in Washington, D.C., on February 13, 1944.

His love of the sea was kept alive by keen membership in the Bar Yacht Club where he was racing Captain for ten years, and a leadership role with the Sea Scouts—coincidentally carried back to Canada where a Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in New Glasgow, near his home town, is named in his honour (RCSCC 87 Admiral Murray).
In February and March, he participated in the carrier's offensive patrols in the Coral Sea and in the attacks on Japanese installations at Salamaua and Lae located on the northern coast of New Guinea.

The ship was laid down on October 7, 1943 at Newark, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company; launched on December 30, 1943; sponsored by Mrs. J. E. Thornhill, the mother of Lt. (jg.) Thornhill; and commissioned on February 1, 1944.
