Electrification took place between Flinders Street and Box Hill in December 1922, and extended to Ringwood the following month, then Croydon in November 1925 and finally to Lilydale in October 1925.

From Burnley, the line is triplicated to Box Hill then duplicated to Mooroolbark, while the final section between Mooroolbark and Lilydale is single track.

Morton Park is located along the Belgrave and Lilydale railway lines, and is in close proximity to St Thomas the Apostle Primary School, Blackburn Lake Primary School, Blackburn Lake, Blackburn Railway Station and the Blackburn Library.
In 1882, the railway from Melbourne to Camberwell was extended to Lilydale, to form the Lilydale railway line.
