Nilgiri North was first ascended in October 1962 by The Netherlands Himalayan Expedition, the team leader was a famous French climber Lionel Terray.

The French climbers Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray reached the main summit via the gently sloping SW ridge from the 7200m Sakietang La that separates Chomo Lonzo from Makalu.
Previously he had made the second ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1947, with Lionel Terray.
