7 unusual facts about Little Carpathians


Dlhé diely

It is one of the newest residential quarters of the city, it is situated at the foothills of the Little Carpathians overlooking the river Danube, offering extensive views over Bratislava and Austria.

Karlova Ves

It is located in the western part of the city close to the river Danube on the slopes of the Little Carpathians mountains and it is part of the Bratislava IV administrative district.

Laurinc Gate

There was a water moat in front of it and unlike the sometimes dry moat near Michael's Gate, this one always contained water due to its proximity to the Danube and the presence of the mouth of a stream coming down from the Little Carpathians mountains.

Little Carpathians

Insurgency in the mountains lasted until the occupation by the Soviet Red Army in 1945.

Mlynská dolina

Geographically and historically it constitutes a much larger area of the entire valley of the river Vydrica, including its upper part located in the Little Carpathians mountains, today no longer associated with Mlynská dolina.

Nové Mesto, Bratislava

The Little Carpathians part was almost untouched, with the exception of upper Mlynská dolina valley.

Nové Mesto is located near the Little Carpathians, and around half of the whole cadastral area is covered by Bratislava Forest Park, with one of the attractions being the Kamzík TV Tower.


Modra Observatory

The Astronomical and Geophysical observatory of Comenius University is located near the town of Modra and in the mountain range of Little Carpathians.

South-east wall

The South-east wall (German: Südostwall) (also known as Reichsschutzstellung) was a system of fortifications planned by Nazi Germany in the late stages of World War II to extend along the Little Carpathians and Lake Neusiedl southwards to the River Drau.

Western Carpathians

The boundary between the Western Carpathians and the Eastern Alps is formed by the Vienna Basin, the Hainburg Hills of the Little Carpathians at Devín Gate, and a gap carved by the Danube.
