Today the steep and narrow valleys are covered in a thin layer of soil, with a low pH, able to support only strong grasses, rushes and heathers.
It has a feeling for landscape, often portraying actual places, especially in the high country of the Welsh Marches, such as Nordy Bank, and the Long Mynd in The Knockers.

The views from the top encompass the Shropshire Hills AONB, Wenlock Edge, the Long Mynd, both Clee Hills, the Radnorshire / Welsh hills; views south reach as far as Mortimer Forest, the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Malvern Hills.
In 1845 he purchased the manor and estates of Ratlinghope, between the Long Mynd and the Stiperstones in Shropshire.
