He had an awkward start when he was drafted in for the 2010-2011 Ashes series in Australia: resident TMS scorer Malcolm Ashton did not travel when he was asked to pay his own way.

His scoring career began in the mid-1970s at Rawtenstall Cricket Club which soon led to scoring for BBC Radio and Channel 4's cricket programmes.

In 2009 Malcolm took over BBC Sport's most popular columns following the death of his predecessor Bill 'Bearders' Frindall in 2009.
