Alloa

According to Alfred Barnard, the Victorian historian of British distilling and brewing, the distillery was founded as a malt distillery by John Bald in 1799.

Beer in Scotland

Thomas Pennant wrote in A Tour in Scotland (1769) that on the island of Islay "ale is frequently made of the young tops of heath, mixing two-thirds of that plant with one of malt, sometimes adding hops".

History of beer

The popularity of hops was at first mixed—the Brewers Company of London went so far as to state "no hops, herbs, or other like thing be put into any ale or liquore wherof ale shall be made—but only liquor (water), malt, and yeast." However, by the 16th century, "ale" had come to refer to any strong beer, and all ales and beers were hopped, giving rise to the verse noted by the curious antiquary John Aubrey

Mash ingredients

Peated malt is also available; this is distillers malt that has been smoked over burning peat, which imparts the aroma and flavor characteristics of Islay whisky and some Irish whiskey.

Other Master of Malt branded products include a Maple Whisky Liqueur, a mature your own whisky kit and Kentucky Toasted Oak Barrels.

Mystery Disc

A number of the earlier tracks—"I Was a Teen-Age Malt Shop", "The Birth of Captain Beefheart" and "Metal Man Has Won His Wings", all likely recorded in 1964—feature Captain Beefheart on vocals.

Old Pulteney distillery

The distillery produces the Old Pulteney single-malt whisky at a number of ages and has a visitor centre in Huddart Street.

Olde English 800

In 1992, Pabst introduced Old English 800 Draft, a cold-filtered instead of pasteurized "draft-style" malt liquor.

Ruardean

His relatives, James and William, were born in Ruardean and are today known worldwide for their hot malt drink Horlicks.
