One important project is the translocation of the critically endangered Whitaker's Skink from the only remaining mainland population at nearby Pukerua Bay.

Notable amongst these will be the Tuatara, the Little Spotted Kiwi, a subspecies of the carnivorous Powelliphanta snail, and a range of threatened plants endemic to the Wellington Region.

Paremata

The area to the north, which included a subdivision called "Dolly Varden" (named after a Charles Dickens character), is now called Mana because the new Mana Railway Station a little further north was given that name; probably because it is the first point on the rail journey north at which travellers get a view of Mana Island.

Cape Egmont Lighthouse

The light was manufactured by Simpson & Co., Pimlico, London, in 1864 and erected on Mana Island to the north west of Porirua in 1865, but it was sometimes confused with the Pencarrow Head light at the entrance to Wellington Harbour and in 1877 the light was dismantled and moved to Cape Egmont.

Whitaker's skink

The Department of Conservation and the Friends of Mana Island are running a five year project to catch and breed enough animals from the vulnerable Pukerua Bay colony to establish a sustainable population on nearby predator-free Mana Island.
