As a painter Maxim Kantor, who states that "he didn't want to study under anybody and his father (the philosopher Karl Kantor) was all he needed" was deeply influenced by Michelangelo, Mantegna, Goya and Petrov Vodkin.
He was most impressed with the painters of the Italian Renaissance Piero della Francesca, Masaccio and Mantegna.

The same year he executed a portrait of the painter Mantegna, reproduced in fresco for the lunettes of the Brera, a work that won the prize at the foundation of Mylius.

However, the Hopfer family did not hesitate to plagiarize the work of their contemporaries: of Daniel's 230 known prints, 14 are copies of other masters, mainly Mantegna, whilst only a minority of Hieronymus' 82 plates are his original work—no less than 21 are copies of Durer's works, and around 30 others are copies from Jacopo de' Barbari, Raimondi and Altdorfer among others.
It belonged to the Correggio and Terzi families, and in the 16th-17th centuries it was restored by countess Barbara Sanseverino, who desired a true palace for her court, and to house her prestigious collection of works by painters such as Raphael, Titian, Mantegna and Correggio.
