He corresponded with other Liberal Catholics, among them Manzoni, Cesare Cantu, Dupanloup, and Montalembert.
Owned by the Manzoni family, the house was the birthplace of the famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni in 1785.
Although she was made immortal by Manzoni's The Betrothed, she was described by the contemporary writer Ripamonti with words such as "modest", "respectful", and "obedient".
Similarly to Manzoni, Corti mixes fictional individual stories with actual history, going as far as inserting real characters in the plot: for example Father Carlo Gnocchi, Nilde Iotti, Agostino Gemelli, Corti's brother Piero (partly recognizable in Pino Riva).
