Lord Harewood was born at his parents' London house, 2 Orme Square, Bayswater, London, the eldest son of the 7th Earl of Harewood and his first wife, Marion Stein.
Stein married Sophie Bachmann (1883?-1965), and their daughter, the pianist Marion Stein, married successively George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood and the Liberal politician Jeremy Thorpe.
In 1961, jointly with her friend the Countess of Harewood (later Marion Thorpe) and Roslyn Lyons, she founded the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition.
