Named a Best Book of the Year by The Independent of London and The Irish Times, the collection has received the Southern Reviews Annual Short Fiction Award, the Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers, the Texas Institute of Letters' Debut Fiction Award, the Christopher Isherwood Prize, the James Michener Fellowship, and was shortlisted for Ireland's Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, "the richest short story prize in the world."
In February 2001, the Association of American Publishers gave its prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award for the Outstanding Professional Reference or Scholarly Work of 2000 to Michener's opus, The Bees of the World.

Michener's long career has also included the training of more than 80 M.S. and Ph.D. students, among them Paul R. Ehrlich.
He received the Amos Tuck Award for Best Economic Reporting (1978), on the topic of the Fall of the Dollar; the Overseas Press Club of America Award for Best Documentary (1977), on Eurocommunism; the Bagriel Award (1979), for a report on The Pope in Poland; the Peabody Award (1979); and posthumously, the Michener Award to an individual whose efforts exemplify the best in public service journalism (1983).
Falling Through the Earth was recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Society of America Award, Elle Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Award for April 2006 and was chosen as a Book Sense Pick for March 2006.
In 1950, after Michener retired, Meader won both the Republican primary and the general election to be elected from Michigan's 2nd congressional district to the 82nd United States Congress.
